Tesla Begins Deliveries of Model Y in India

After much anticipation, Tesla has started delivering the Model Y electric vehicles (EVs) in key markets across India, including Mumbai, Delhi, Gurugram, and Pune. The news comes after the American EV manufacturer opened two Experience Centers in the country, one in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, and another in New Delhi.

The first retail outlet of Tesla in India, the Bandra Kurla Complex Experience Center, opened its doors on July 15. Since then, approximately 600 orders for the Model Y have been secured by Tesla in India, following the official launch in July.

The high price of the Model Y in India is due to nearly 100% import duties, which have caused the base price to be around $70,000. Despite this, the first Model Y delivery in India was made to Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik in Mumbai on September 5. Minister Sarnaik purchased his white Model Y at full price without discounts.

Tesla offers two versions of the Model Y in India: the Model Y RWD priced at ₹59.89 lakh (approximately C$97,000/US$71,800) and the Model Y Long Range RWD for ₹67.89 lakh (approximately C$110,000/US$81,400). Buyers can choose to add Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) package for an additional ₹6 lakh (C$9,700/US$7,200).

Additional Model Y handovers will happen soon, and the vehicles are available for prospective buyers to explore in person at both the Bandra Kurla Complex and New Delhi Experience Centers. Tesla has not mentioned any plans for local production of the Model Y in India.

Despite the low number of orders, which is below their expectations, Tesla plans to deliver between 350 and 500 vehicles this year, starting with shipments in September from Shanghai. The limited EV adoption in India, combined with high import duties, may be contributing factors to the lower-than-anticipated demand for the Model Y.

As Tesla continues to expand its presence in India, it will be interesting to see how the market responds to the Model Y and whether demand for EVs in the country grows. Stay tuned for more updates on Tesla's developments in India.
