Tesla intends to establish a Research and Development (R&D) facility in Berlin, Germany, proximity to the Grünheide Gigafactory being a key location consideration.
Tesla to Establish European Development Centre in Berlin-Köpenick
Tesla, the American electric vehicle and clean energy company, has announced plans to establish a new development centre in Berlin-Köpenick, Germany. The centre will focus on both electric vehicles and battery production.
The initial team of around 130 engineers from the Gigafactory in Grünheide and smaller sites in Berlin will move to the new centre, with plans to employ around 250 people in the future. The exact location of the centre within Köpenick has not been disclosed yet.
The project has been the subject of months of confidential discussions between Tesla and the district of Treptow-Köpenick. After considering around three dozen potential sites, Köpenick was chosen for Tesla's European Research and Development (R&D) centre. The site has approximately 20,000 square meters of halls available, with potential for further expansion.
The development centre will be located on a former industrial site, specifically on the historic former Kabelwerk Köpenick factory grounds in the Treptow-Köpenick district. Work on the renovation will begin as soon as the applications are approved.
Mayor Igel confirmed that the focus of Tesla's work in Köpenick will be on electric vehicles, battery technology, and charging infrastructure. Berlin stood out against other international locations in the selection process, as reported by various sources, including the Tagesspiegel.
Lars Moravy, Vice President for Vehicle Development at Tesla, announced the decision on Wednesday evening. It was not certain for a while that Tesla's European R&D centre would indeed come to Berlin. Initial technical tests at the chosen site are expected to commence in 2021 or 2026, as reported by the dpa news agency.
The news about the new centre was also reported by various sources, including the Tagesspiegel. The centre will initially move around 130 engineers from the Gigafactory in Grünheide and smaller sites in Berlin, with plans to employ around 250 people in the future. The exact location within Köpenick has not been disclosed yet.
