Tesla's chief executive, Elon Musk, announces a daring assertion about the company's humanoid robot.
Elon Musk, the visionary CEO of Tesla, sees a potential solution for the company's current global sales downturn with the introduction of Optimus, a bipedal bot under development. Musk made these comments in a post on X on Tuesday, as Tesla also shared its "Master Plan Part IV."
For nearly two decades, Tesla has been at the forefront of innovation, developing electric vehicles, energy products, and now, humanoid robots. Optimus, the company's humanoid robot project, is aimed at supporting humans in everyday tasks and industrial environments.
Musk envisions Optimus being used in various settings, from factories to homes. The robot could perform tasks such as babysitting, walking dogs, mowing lawns, getting groceries, and even serving drinks. Musk believes that 80% of Tesla's value will come from Optimus, indicating the significant role it is expected to play in the company's future.
However, Tesla faces stiff competition in the humanoid robot market. Companies like Boston Dynamics, Unitree, Figure, and Robotera, as well as major technology companies, countries like Japan, and China, are also developing humanoid robots.
Musk stated that when Optimus is produced at scale, it could cost between $20,000 and $30,000, making it relatively affordable compared to other humanoid robots in the market. Yet, it remains unclear when AI-powered Optimus will secure meaningful deployment at a large scale.
The development of Optimus is part of Tesla's broader mission to bring AI into the physical world through its products and services. As the robot changes the perception of labor and its availability and capability, it could potentially revolutionise the industrial and service sectors, freeing up time for humans to focus on what they love.
The current downturn in Tesla's sales is due to tough competition from China, public unease over Elon Musk's political controversies, and other reasons. With the introduction of Optimus, Tesla aims to redefine its position in the market and pave the way for a future where robots and humans work together seamlessly.
