Test Drive Impression: Aston Martin's Latest Vanquish Volante Convertible Exceeded Our Anticipations in Significant Ways
Aston Martin, the iconic British luxury car manufacturer, has unveiled its latest masterpiece – the Vanquish Volante. This two-door, two-seat convertible is a limited-production model, with fewer than 400 examples set to be made annually, worldwide.
The Vanquish Volante boasts a carbon-fiber body with a subtly integrated spoiler and a bonded-aluminum chassis. The removal of the roof added 200 pounds to the vehicle, but it retains the same performance as its coupe counterpart. The convertible's top is an eight-layer cloth construction that satisfies the cabin when raised.
Under the hood, the Vanquish Volante houses a 5.2-liter twin-turbocharged V-12 engine, producing 824 hp and 738 ft lbs of torque. This powerhouse propels the car from zero to 60 mph in a breathtaking 3.3 seconds and claims a top speed of 214 mph.
The Vanquish Volante's motor and exhaust note strike a uniquely alluring balance. It's less screamy than Ferrari's 12Cilindri Spider and less of a muffling bombast than Bentley's Continental GTC. The beautifully tuned chassis and smooth-shifting gearbox help avoid the brain slamming experienced in other supercars during flat-out acceleration.
The car shares adaptable Bilstein shocks, large wheels, standard carbon-ceramic brakes, custom-developed Pirelli P-Zero tires, and an available titanium exhaust with its stablemate. To compensate for the convertible's additional weight, the Vanquish Volante has re-engineered the rear damper and front and rear strut braces, adding stiffness to maintain its exceptional performance.
Inside, the Vanquish Volante features perforated leather and carbon-fiber trim, some of which is woven with copper and rose gold. Aston Martin's new infotainment system, while improved, has glitches and can fail to work in areas with poor cell reception.
Aston Martin, under the leadership of CEO Adrian Hallmark and CTO Adrian Newey, has been making strides towards moving from a high-potential brand to a high-performance business. The company has received significant investments from Lawrence Stroll and has recently released new cars such as the DB12 grand tourer, next-gen Vantage sports car, and Vanquish super-sports GT.
The Vanquish Volante is in production since 2025 and is priced at $489,700 (base) and $604,400 (as tested). Aston Martin has announced plans to continue expanding the Vanquish series with luxury editions like the Vanquish Volante, emphasizing handcrafted luxury and rare artistry on wheels rather than mass production. The Vanquish Volante is expected to be delivered worldwide starting in Q4 2025.
