Testimony's Impact Could Alter Case Outcome
In the city of Yakutsk, Siberia, a long-standing car accident investigation has taken an unexpected turn with the recent involvement of eyewitness Evgeny Tagai.
On September 15, 2021, Mr. Tagai witnessed a fatal accident on Zhornitskogo Street. The incident occurred at the intersection of Semen Danilova and Zhornitskogo streets, where a three-axle truck-manipulator, driven by a 44-year-old man, failed to stop at a red light and crossed the pedestrian crossing. The victim of the accident was Tatyana Vasilyeva (Simakova), a journalist who had worked for various media outlets. Tragically, Ms. Vasilyeva left behind two daughters.
Mr. Tagai contacted the authorities about the accident on September 17, 2021, but returned to Moscow and did not follow up until April 12, 2022. Upon his return to Yakutsk, he filed a complaint with the Investigative Committee about the criminal negligence of the investigator.
The initial investigation, handled by the Investigative Department of the MVD of Yakutia, was stopped due to the absence of a crime, based on an auto-technical judicial expertise. However, with Mr. Tagai's recent return and renewed interest in the case, the investigation has been reopened.
On April 13, 2023, Mr. Tagai was questioned by investigator Ilya Petrovich Potapov about the accident. Mr. Tagai believes that his testimony could fundamentally change the course of the case. Lawyer Pavel Vasilyev has also been involved in the case.
The accident involved a light car, but the driver of the vehicle was not identified in the initial investigation. The driver of the "Isuzu" mounter was accused of petty hooliganism and taken to police station No. 2, but was later released without charges.
The driver was heading along Semen Danilova Street towards Zhornitskogo Street when the accident occurred. Witness accounts from Mr. Tagai have emerged, providing a fresh perspective to the investigation.
As the investigation continues, the hope is that the truth will be uncovered and justice will be served for the family of Tatyana Vasilyeva (Simakova).
