Texas Police Stopped My 2025 Tesla Cybertruck Due to Lack of Registration Tags, But I Argued They Are Not Needed in Texas; Officer Verified With Superiors and Issued No Citation
Texas is taking a significant step towards improving safety and security on its roads by eliminating temporary paper license plates, a move that has been long advocated for by law enforcement officers across the state. The new law, enacted as House Bill 718, will take effect on July 1, 2025.
The decision to phase out temporary paper license plates comes in the wake of growing concerns over fraudulent plates and their association with misuse. In 2021, the state estimated that a staggering 1.8 million fraudulent paper plates were on the roads.
One tragic incident that highlighted the need for change was the death of Officer Brandon Tsia. Tsia lost control of his squad car while attempting to pull over a vehicle with a fake paper license plate, an incident that has been cited as a reason for the new law.
The new law will see new car buyers in Texas receiving their permanent metal license plates at the point of sale. However, a recent incident involving a Tesla Cybertruck owner, MiGi Buuhat, has brought attention to a potential loophole in the system.
Buuhat, who purchased his new Cybertruck on July 2, 2022, in Texas, found himself pulled over by the police as he was pulling into his driveway. The Tesla dealer did not have Buuhat's new metal license plates, and the dealer stated that temporary license plates are not required in Texas.
Despite this, the police officer checked the vehicle identification number (VIN) off the truck and called it in to confirm it was not a stolen vehicle. The officer then asked to see Buuhat's license and registration.
The transition to metal license plates aims to improve security, reduce fraud, and aid law enforcement efforts. Motorists will still receive registration stickers in the mail after their purchase. The Texas DMV is actively phasing out temporary paper license plates, ensuring that most car buyers will now receive their permanent metal license plates at the time of purchase from a dealership.
This change is part of a broader effort to enhance safety and security on Texas roads, a move that has been strongly supported by Grand Prairie Police Chief Daniel Scesney and other law enforcement officers. As the implementation date of July 1, 2025, approaches, motorists are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new regulations to ensure a smooth and safe driving experience.
