Texas Republican senator Ted Cruz found himself in the spotlight once again, this time for his absence during a crucial debate over redistricting plans in Texas. The controversy comes four years after Cruz's much-criticized trip to Cancun during a power crisis in the state.

Cruz's absence was not unnoticed, with Democrats in the state leaving their own to prevent the House of Representatives from reaching the required number to pass the proposals. This move was reminiscent of what Cruz criticized Democrats for doing in 2021, when Texas Democrats fled the state to fight against redistricting plans.

The senator's criticism of the Democrats did not go unchallenged. A third user was more direct, saying "Says the f*ing ahole who fled to Cancun?" in response to Cruz's criticism. Another user shared a CNN article from 2021 asking "This you?" in response to the senator's comments.

The memory of Cruz's Cancun trip is still fresh in many minds. During the 2021 Texas power crisis, Cruz took a trip to Cancun, a decision widely regarded as a poor one. Texas attorney general Ken Paxton and Texas House speaker Dustin Burrows even filed a legal complaint in California to carry out arrest warrants issued by their state's House of Representatives against the fleeing Democrats.

Paxton and Burrows accused the fleeing Democrats of refusing to do their jobs and running away to exploit California's political system. Cruz later admitted that his trip to Cancun was a mistake.

The controversy surrounding Cruz's absence and his past Cancun trip did not go unnoticed by political figures. California governor Gavin Newsom responded to comments made against him by Paxton with sarcasm on Twitter. Newsom also made a reference to Cruz's Cancun trip in response to the senator's criticism of Democrats.

In response, Cruz took to Twitter himself, making a reference to a famous restaurant in California. However, journalist Mehdi Hasan said Cruz's criticism "might have been a half-decent burn" if he hadn't been caught up in the scandal of his Cancun trip from four years ago.

Julián Castro, the former US housing secretary, advised Cruz to "sit this one out" in response to his criticism of Democrats. Castro also noted that Cruz left Texas to sip drinks on a Cancun beach while Texas Democrats left to fight for voting rights.

The debate over redistricting in Texas is far from over. New plans for the congressional map of Texas would create five additional districts that voted for US president Donald Trump in last year's election. However, local Democrats are opposed to these plans and have branded them a "Trump gerrymander."

Republicans are pressing for the return of the fleeing Democrats, but it remains to be seen how this situation will unfold. One thing is certain, however: the memory of Ted Cruz's Cancun trip will likely continue to haunt him as he criticizes others for their actions.
