Thailand's New Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul Assumes Office

Thailand has a new prime minister, as Anutin Charnvirakul, the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, has been sworn in. The outgoing caretaker Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, has stated that the Pheu Thai-led government has fulfilled its duty and will step aside once the new cabinet is sworn in and delivers its policy statement.

Anutin Charnvirakul secured the necessary parliamentary support to become prime minister. In his inaugural speech, he emphasized the importance of enforcing the law fairly, without favours or persecution. He also pledged transparency and rule of law under his administration.

The new prime minister has expressed a desire for unity and reconciliation, particularly in moving the country forward. He thanked MPs, including those from the opposition People's Party (PP), for their votes. In return, he accepted the conditions set by the PP, which include the dissolution of the parliament within four months and the organisation of a referendum to draft a new constitution, leading to the formation of a minority government.

The Khao Kradong land case, which involves Anutin's Bhumjaithai Party, will be handled legally, transparently, and free from political manipulation. Anutin Charnvirakul has also stated that he will not take revenge as prime minister.

The new prime minister has declined to reveal his first priorities, but he has pledged quick action. Anutin Charnvirakul has emphasized the need for unity and the avoidance of disputes, expressing a desire to reconcile former rivals.

In a significant move, Anutin Charnvirakul signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the PP, binding him not to seek a majority government before dissolving parliament within four months. This agreement is expected to shape the political landscape of Thailand in the coming months.

As Thailand's 32nd prime minister, Anutin Charnvirakul is now tasked with leading the country through challenging times. His commitment to transparency, rule of law, and unity offers a glimmer of hope for a more peaceful and prosperous future for Thailand.
