The Khok Sung district in Sa Kaeo province has been placed under martial law, with the military taking charge of security matters, as part of a new peacekeeping zone. This zone, declared by the Burapha Task Force, aims to ensure the safety of Thai citizens from potential threats originating from Cambodia.

The decision follows encroachment by Cambodians protesting Thailand's temporary border barrier. Maj Gen Benchapol Dechatiwong na Ayutthaya, the commander of the Burapha Task Force, signed the directive for the establishment of barbed-wire fences between Thailand and Cambodia in the Sa Kaeo province.

The initial segment for the fence is a 14-kilometer stretch between boundary markers 50 and 51 in Aranyaprathet district. The peacekeeping zone bans weapons and firearm replicas, photo shoots at military bases, attempts to block roads obstructing authorities, alcoholic beverages, and loudspeakers without prior authorisation.

Strategic roads and possibly security cameras may be added to the fence in disputed zones. The Armed Forces Development Command of Thailand proposed this initiative, with Maj Gen Vithai insisting that it marks the beginning of a comprehensive barrier along the Thai-Cambodian border.

The border village of Ban Nong Chan in Khok Sung district has been designated as a peacekeeping zone. Construction of the first section of the border fence with Cambodia is contingent upon approval from the National Security Council (NSC), which is expected soon.

However, Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has warned that constructing structures in contested areas could worsen tensions between the two countries. The decision to construct the fence follows a survey conducted by Gen Manas Jundee, the RTAF chief-of-staff.

Thailand plans to extend the border fence along its entire boundary with Cambodia, starting with the areas already demarcated. In disputed zones, three layers of barbed wire will serve as temporary barriers. The peacekeeping zone is essential for maintaining Thai safety and stability in the region.
