Thaksin Shinawatra, the 76-year-old billionaire and de facto leader of the Pheu Thai Party, returned to Thailand on Aug 22, 2023, after more than 15 years of self-imposed exile abroad. The former prime minister's arrival at Don Mueang airport, Bangkok, around 6pm on Thursday, sparked controversy and debate.

Upon arrival, Thaksin was temporarily held at the airport for questioning. His travel documents were verified, but his passport was seized due to a prior travel restriction. Immigration and airport officials were in discussions with Thaksin's legal team to ensure his travel complied with all relevant laws and regulations.

Thaksin's trip to Singapore was solely for medical reasons and not an attempt to evade justice. He had previously served eight years in prison in three cases, later reduced to one year by royal clemency, for abuse of authority and conflict of interest while serving as prime minister prior to 2006. Thaksin remained in hospital until early 2024, when he was paroled.

However, Thaksin still faces another case at the Supreme Court's Division for Political Office Holders, involving his six-month stay on the 14th floor of Police General Hospital for treatment in 2023 and 2024. The case regarding the resumption of Thaksin's hospital treatment took place at Thailand's Supreme Court on September 9, 2023.

Critics have demanded proof of Thaksin's serious illness, noting his health improved quickly after leaving police custody. The Medical Council investigated and ordered disciplinary action against some doctors. Opposition politicians have questioned Thaksin's health during recent debates. Thaksin claimed he was travelling to Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Upon his return, Thaksin was taken to Bangkok Remand Prison, but was moved to Police General Hospital the same night, only 13 hours after arrival. The hospital has been the site of Thaksin's treatment in the past.

Thaksin's arrival has reignited political tensions in Thailand. The Pheu Thai Party, which Thaksin founded, remains a significant political force, despite his absence. The ongoing legal case against Thaksin and the debate surrounding his health and intentions will continue to shape Thailand's political landscape in the coming months.
