The city's parking lot is undergoing deterioration, anticipated to corrode more severely.
The Prinzengarten Parking Garage, a much-used facility in the heart of Kiel, has been the subject of recent discussions regarding its future. A report submitted in July confirmed that the structure of the parking garage remains intact, despite a serious design flaw that has caused water damage in certain areas.
The royal house, one-third co-owner of the parking garage, has expressed a preference for a partial renovation over a complete overhaul. City architect Udo Hollauer is set to make a decision about the long-term future of the parking garage by the end of this year, with the city council of Kiel also playing a key role in the decision-making process.
The proposed partial renovation includes cleaning and visual improvements to the parking garage and public toilet, as well as the use of wooden beams to stop the water damage process in affected areas. This approach could potentially allow the parking garage to be used for approximately 10 to 15 more years.
Markus Seeger, the former city works manager, announced the start of work for the Prinzengarten Parking Garage renovation in early 2024. However, the project has since been postponed. The estimated construction cost for a complete renovation of the parking garage is approximately 2.3 million euros, while the total cost, including architects' and other costs, is estimated to be around three million euros.
Despite the water damage, the structure of the parking garage, despite the water damage, is not currently affected. Water enters the building through the top parking deck, causing steel reinforcements to expand up to three times. No urgent need for immediate action on the Prinzengarten Parking Garage has been identified.
The city works also plan to clean and visually improve the parking garage and the public toilet as part of the renovation. The Prinzengarten Parking Garage renovation project is expected to start no earlier than 2026. The decision about the long-term future of this important city facility will be made by the end of the year, providing much-needed clarity to the residents and businesses of Kiel.
