The classic tale of The Wizard of Oz returns in a contemporary adaptation at The Sphere in Las Vegas
In the heart of Las Vegas, the classic tale of "The Wizard of Oz" has received a modern makeover at the Sphere. The senior writer for Variety, Chris Willman, recently had the opportunity to witness this reinvented production firsthand.
The show, which opened last week, features a myriad of technological advancements. One of the most striking elements is the use of flying monkey drones, which navigate slowly and, while not particularly scary, add an element of innovation to the production.
The Sphere's screen, significantly larger than traditional movie screens, immerses audiences in the fantastical world of Oz. The show also includes 4D special effects, such as snow and tennis ball-like apples being thrown at the audience, further enhancing the immersive experience.
However, one scene that stands out is the tornado sequence. With wind machines and debris that circles around the auditorium, the intensity of this scene causes pages to flap back and forth, creating a truly thrilling experience.
Despite the technological enhancements, Willman notes that the show remains faithful to the original 1939 Judy Garland movie in terms of look, sound, and feel. He does express mixed feelings about the use of AI in the reinvention, suggesting it could be a slippery slope.
Willman also warns parents that the show includes some scary elements, such as the flying monkey drones and the intense tornado scene. Some people have criticized the reinvention, but Willman does not mention any new criticisms in his review.
The yellow brick road can be found on the Las Vegas strip, leading directly to the Sphere. If you're a fan of "The Wizard of Oz" or simply looking for a unique entertainment experience, this modern take on the classic tale could be just what you're looking for.
As for the question of whether it's too soon to have a little fun with "The Wizard of Oz" after 86 years, Willman suggests that it's not too soon at all. After all, the original was conceived as popular entertainment, and this reinvented version certainly lives up to that legacy.
