The eatery is instituting a novel regulation - host assertion: "It's not about restricting, but about fostering respect"
In the bustling town of Esslingen am Neckar, Salvatore Marrazzo, the owner of the Italian restaurant "Accanto Semplicissimo," has implemented a new rule that is causing quite a stir. Since opening in 2018, Marrazzo has made a name for himself by banning the splitting of bills in his establishment.
This decision, aimed at avoiding time-consuming discussions and extra work for his staff, especially with large groups and picky customers, has divided opinions on social media. Some criticise the rule as typical German antisocial behaviour, while others praise it for eliminating stress and time-consuming bill-splitting.
A survey commissioned by OpenTable found that traditional gender roles are still prevalent in German restaurants regarding paying the bill. Around 65% of respondents think the man should pay the bill, while at least a third believe the bill should be split equally between the two parties. Interestingly, only 3% of respondents think it's the woman's responsibility to pay.
The survey, however, did not provide information on the number of respondents, the methodology used, or whether the results varied by region or demographic. It also did not specify whether the results were influenced by the type of restaurant, such as fine dining or casual dining establishments.
Despite the controversy, there have been no complaints since the rule was implemented three weeks ago, and guests have shown great understanding. The German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) understands Marrazzo's move, as separate payments often pose challenges for businesses.
Marrazzo himself has defended his decision, stating that it is about mutual respect for both employees and guests. He posted on social media that his decision is not about imposing his personal beliefs, but about creating a fair and efficient dining experience for all.
This rule, while controversial, highlights the ongoing debate about gender roles and social norms in the German restaurant industry. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how such debates shape the dining experiences of the future.
