In a series of significant moves, the US President, Donald Trump, has taken steps to increase his influence in Washington.

The President has activated the National Guard, with several states governed by Republicans sending additional troops to the capital. Some soldiers patrolling areas like entertainment districts and tourist areas in Washington are carrying weapons. This deployment comes amidst allegations of rampant crime in the city, which Trump claims justifies his expanded powers in the capital.

Meanwhile, the local police of the capital have been temporarily placed under federal supervision. This decision, made by Trump, has been met with criticism and is the subject of ongoing legal action. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is expected to take over management of Union Station in Washington in September, due to ongoing issues and the need to improve station operations.

Union Station, owned by the US Transportation Department for several decades, is currently in a dilapidated state. The Transportation Minister, Sean Duffy, has stated his intention to improve its condition. The US Transportation Department plans to attract more businesses to Union Station and expects to formally confirm its plan to take over management in September. However, it remains unclear what exact changes will be made.

The goal of the US government, as stated by Trump, is to make Washington "safe and beautiful" and do so at a lower cost. The Minister also plans to ensure Union Station is no longer dirty and will work to eliminate homelessness there.

However, critics warn that Trump is using Washington as a testing ground for an authoritarian style of government. They argue that his actions are being closely watched and scrutinised, with concerns about the potential erosion of democratic norms and civil liberties.

The US Transportation Department has gradually reduced its control over Union Station through various agreements, leading to speculation about Trump's true intentions. As the situation in Washington continues to evolve, the city remains a focal point of political debate and controversy.
