OpenAI Launches GPT Store, Empowering Users to Create Custom AI Tools

OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence research laboratory, has unveiled the GPT Store, a platform that allows users to create and share customized AI tools using the latest GPT technology.

The GPT Store is now accessible to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise users, offering a variety of tools tailored to diverse needs. Teachers, in particular, can leverage this opportunity to create their own GPTs and make them available on the store, much like app stores from tech giants Apple and Google.

For those unfamiliar, a GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a model trained to generate human-like text. Users can instruct the GPT builder for tasks ranging from generating visuals for new products to formatting code.

The evolution of the GPT Store could lead to a thriving community of educators designing and sharing education-specific GPTs. Already, the store features AI tools such as an AI guide to literature and reading called Books, and CK-12 Flexi, a math and science tutor. It also includes offerings from esteemed institutions like Khan Academy and Canva.

However, it's important to note that currently, users cannot sell their AI tools on the GPT Store. OpenAI has plans to add this feature in the coming months.

Access to the OpenAI GPT platform, including ChatGPT, is available to anyone who signs up for a free account. Users can create a free account by signing up with their email and password on chat.openai.com or via the official ChatGPT app. Access to newer models like GPT-5 is granted automatically and stepwise to all user groups, including free users, Plus subscribers, and enterprise customers.

To create a custom GPT, users need a ChatGPT Plus subscription. They can use OpenAI's GPTs editor without coding. However, custom GPTs must adhere to OpenAI's usage policies and GPT brand guidelines to be added to the new GPT store.

The customizable GPT feature was made available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers in November and has resulted in over 3 million GPTs being created. The GPT Store, with its vast array of tools and the potential for user-generated content, promises to be a dynamic and exciting space for AI enthusiasts and educators alike.

For more information on how to use the GPT builder for various tasks, OpenAI has provided a blog post detailing examples and best practices. Additionally, the GPT Store features more education-specific GPTs that can be found on a specific link.

As the GPT Store continues to grow and evolve, it may become increasingly challenging for educators to keep track of everything available in the AI space for teaching and learning. Nonetheless, the potential benefits for education and the wider community make it a promising development in the world of AI.
