Democracy Weeks: A Celebration of Tolerance and Coexistence in Wuppertal

The city of Wuppertal is gearing up for a week-long celebration of democracy, as the Democracy Weeks event series kicks off. Funded by the Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of the "Democracy Lives!" federal program, this initiative aims to emphasize the value of democracy and the importance of tolerant coexistence.

The event series, which runs from September 6 to September 13, promises a diverse and engaging program. The highlight of the week is the Democracy Festival, scheduled for September 13 from 10 am to 3 pm at the Central Library. This grand event sees itself as a meeting point for all, a place where democracy is lived.

The Central Library, the heart of the festival, will host a variety of activities for people of all ages. For adults, there will be a creative writing workshop and various information stands on topics like the city's anti-discrimination work, voluntary engagement opportunities, and the "Peacebell" project. Interactive activities include a picture book cinema and voting pillars.

In the casino garden in front of the Central Library, a music program is planned. The festival will also feature a choir concert, a lecture, and two exhibitions on the topic of democracy and diversity.

The diversity of actors involved in the event series allows for a wide range of content aspects and perspectives in the program. Various organizations, associations, and initiatives have come together for this event series, including "die börse" Wuppertal, the Bergische Volkshochschule Solingen Wuppertal, the Caritas association Wuppertal/Solingen, the Else-Lasker-Schüler Society, "Die Färberei", the "Kultursommer" and "Wupperwelle" projects, the Solidarity Community Wuppertal, the city's equal opportunities and anti-discrimination department, the city's department for citizen participation and engagement, the youth council, and the Center for Good Deeds.

The city library initiated the project as part of its democracy promotion, which it considers a crucial aspect of modern library work. The organization that funded the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth in the framework of the "Democracy Lives!" program to participate in the Democracy Weeks in Wuppertal is the "Partnerschaft für Demokratie" (Partnership for Democracy).

Karin Röhrich, Director of the City Library, expresses gratitude to all cooperation partners. The purpose of the event is not only to celebrate democracy but also to motivate website users and citizens to use their voice and vote in the local election. Admission to all events during Democracy Weeks is free, making it accessible to all residents of Wuppertal.

The Democracy Weeks event series includes a neighborhood festival, a creative slam with mayoral candidates, a democracy café, and a survey at various locations in the city. These events are designed to foster a sense of community and encourage active participation in democratic processes.

So, mark your calendars for the Democracy Weeks in Wuppertal, a week-long celebration of democracy, diversity, and coexistence. Let's come together to celebrate our democracy and commit to making our city a more inclusive and vibrant place.
