"The 'Road oases' contest commences its latest phase"
The Ostalb district in Germany has once again proven its commitment to climate and species protection, winning first place in the "Species Protection" category for the second consecutive year at the "Street Oases" competition. This year, the district also claimed the top spot in the "Climate Protection" category, with Uttlingen, one of the winners of last year's competition, leading the way.
The "Street Oases" competition, organised by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport, recognises and rewards municipalities for their efforts in climate and species protection. The competition, which is open to applications until October 10, 2025, celebrates innovative approaches that improve both the environment and the aesthetic appeal of urban spaces.
In the "Species Protection" category, the Ostalb district's winning project focused on areas that promote insect biodiversity, such as planting strips of native flowers. This approach not only enhances the local ecosystem but also adds a splash of colour to the streets.
Uttlingen's victory in the "Climate Protection" category was for its innovative approach to redesigning areas to improve climate resilience. This included planting climate-resistant plants and unsealing soil to allow rainwater to percolate better, reducing the town's carbon footprint and improving its resilience to extreme weather events.
State Secretary Elke Zimmer visited the winners of last year's competition on July 29 and 30, 2023, and emphasised the importance of collaboration between the administration and citizens in creating these "Street Oases." She praised Uttlingen as an inspiring example of what is possible when everyone works together.
Many volunteers from the "City Beautification" initiative supported the project in Uttlingen, demonstrating the widespread support for these initiatives. The apprentice street sweepers of the Ellwangen road maintenance department were also recognised for their contributions, receiving the "Street Oasis 2024" winner's plaque.
The top ten winners of the competition will receive the "Street Oasis" award, a testament to their dedication to climate and species protection. As the competition continues, it is clear that the Ostalb district and Uttlingen are setting a high bar for other municipalities to follow.
If you are inspired by these initiatives and want to make a difference in your community, applications for the "Street Oases" competition are open until October 10, 2025. Join the movement and help create a greener, more sustainable future.
