In the ongoing National Cancer Prevention Week, the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) is shedding light on the impact of smoking on public health, with a particular focus on cigarettes and vapor products. The DKFZ's analysis, as presented in the new Tobacco Atlas, reveals regional differences in smoking-related deaths across Germany.

The highest rate of male deaths due to smoking was recorded in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with one in six male deaths in 2023 attributed to smoking. On the other hand, the city of Bremen reported the highest rate of female deaths due to smoking.

Interestingly, the data shows an increasing trend in tobacco-related deaths among women, while the numbers are decreasing among men. The national average for male deaths due to smoking stands at 17.5 percent, with Thuringia's rate slightly lower. However, the DKFZ's analysis did not provide specific figures for the number of deaths due to smoking in Thuringia.

The share of female deaths due to smoking in Thuringia is 8.5 percent, lower than the national average of 10.0 percent. This information, along with expert interviews, can be found under the hashtag #FaktenUnvernebelt on Instagram, Facebook, X, and LinkedIn.

The cities of Heidelberg and Erfurt are likely locations associated with the National Cancer Prevention Week, given their connection to the DKFZ. This year, the organizations involved in Thüringen, including the Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft (German Cancer Society), Deutsche Krebshilfe, and the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ), are jointly providing educational initiatives on tobacco-related cancer prevention.

Expert interviews are available as podcasts on the website www.krebspraeventionswoche.de. The data for these statistics comes from the cause of death statistics of the Federal Statistical Office. It's important to note that the DKFZ's analysis does not distinguish between different types of tobacco products, including vapor products.

As we strive towards a healthier future, it's crucial to understand the impact of smoking on our society and take steps to reduce tobacco-related deaths. The National Cancer Prevention Week serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat tobacco use and promote cancer prevention.
