The 2025 Lexical Creativity Contest, organised by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF), saw a surge in the use of creative and evocative neologisms. Among the standout entries was the portmanteau word, "faurevoir."
Submitted by two students from a Saguenay secondary school, Nathan Morin and Nathan Tremblay, "faurevoir" is a composition of the adjective "fake" and the noun "goodbye." The term was retained by the OQLF within the Lexical Creativity Contest and has since gained significant attention.
"Faurevoir" is used to describe a situation where two people who are about to leave each other greet each other, but their meeting is unexpectedly prolonged. For instance, when a conversation extends beyond its intended duration or when two individuals linger longer than anticipated before parting ways.
The jury for the contest, composed of members of the Office, appreciated the transparency and attractiveness of "faurevoir." The Grand Dictionnaire terminologique provides the definition of "faurevoir" as a neologism, a new term in French language, that could quickly be adopted by the population, according to the director of linguistic expertise.
The use of neologisms, such as "faurevoir," submitted in the contest, has been observed to snowball. The reactions to these innovative terms, including "faurevoir," have been generally very positive. For example, the use of "faurevoir" has been well-received, with many finding it a fitting term to describe the aforementioned situation.
Another interesting neologism from the contest was "célébroui," which means losing one's means in front of a celebrity. However, it was not awarded in the competition, with "Puckémon" being the neologism that was not awarded instead.
The OQLF's Linguistic Showcase is used to disseminate neologisms and give them official existence. This platform allows for the continued growth and evolution of the French language in Quebec, fostering creativity and innovation in linguistic expression.
