The Significance of School Leaders in Bridging the Gap Between Education and Employment

In an effort to respond to the push for career pathways, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) has launched a new professional development course aimed at principals and assistant principals. This online, self-paced course provides a comprehensive guide for creating career-connected learning experiences within schools.

The course emphasizes a leadership disposition, helping principals connect career-connected learning to their personal motivations or "why." It encourages principals to seek guidance from successful peers in the field and provides a step-by-step framework for implementing career-connected learning.

The course covers a range of topics, including identifying local resources, engaging stakeholders, overcoming implementation challenges, and sustaining long-term progress. It includes planning tools, templates, and examples from principals who have successfully implemented similar efforts in their schools.

One of the key components of the course is a peer-to-peer component, providing an online community for principals to exchange ideas and learn from each other. The support that principals need sometimes comes in the form of simply a "yes, try it, go ahead."

In addition to this support, the course underscores the importance of involving principals and assistant principals in the highest levels of decision-making. NASSP aims to open the doors for other school leaders who are thinking about bringing similar work to their communities.

The course was designed by and for principals, ensuring that the content is relevant and practical. It does not focus on the technical aspects of career-connected learning, as other organizations are deemed experts in that area.

NASSP has also launched an online community to support the academy and facilitate idea exchange among principals. This community is an essential part of the course, allowing principals to share their experiences and insights with each other, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

With this new course, NASSP is taking a significant step towards empowering principals to lead the way in career-connected learning, ultimately preparing students for success in the modern workforce.
