The stance of the Union regarding the SPD, as revealed in the latest ZDF political opinion poll
Latest Poll Results: CDU/CSU Narrows Gap with SPD, Greens and AfD See Changes
In the latest ZDF Politbarometer, the political landscape in Germany is showing some shifts ahead of the upcoming Bundestag election.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), have gained one point and are now at 23%, just two points behind the incumbent Social Democratic Party (SPD) who remain steady at 25%. This increase for the Union comes as they have narrowed the gap on the SPD, a significant development in the race for Chancellor.
In the chancellor question, Olaf Scholz, the SPD candidate, continues to lead clearly with 64% of the vote. However, there has been a slight dip in support for both Armin Laschet, the CDU/CSU candidate, and Annalena Baerbock of the Greens. Laschet and Baerbock now stand at 19% and 16.5% respectively, a small decrease from their previous positions.
The Greens, who saw a significant rise in support in the previous election, have suffered the largest loss in vote share in the latest ZDF Politbarometer, with about an 11.6% drop compared to the previous election. This drop has allowed the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) to gain ground, reaching 10% in the poll and 20.8% in the election.
The AfD has lost one point and now stands at 10% in the ZDF Politbarometer. The Free Voters are at 3%, while other parties are at 5.5%. The Free Democrats (FDP) and the Left remain at 11% and 6% respectively.
The Free Voters, a regional party, have maintained their position in the polls, while the FDP and the Left have remained relatively stable. The FDP, traditionally a pro-business party, and the Left, a party with a focus on social justice, have both seen minimal changes in their support.
These latest poll results indicate a tightening race for Chancellor, with the CDU/CSU narrowing the gap on the SPD. The Greens, who saw a meteoric rise in the last election, have experienced a significant drop in support, allowing the AfD to gain ground. The SPD, CDU/CSU, and the Greens will be closely watching these trends as the election approaches.
