The trade acquisitions made by the Cardinals at the deadline continue to prove increasingly advantageous
St. Louis Cardinals Acquire Prospects in Trade for Ryan Helsley
The St. Louis Cardinals have made a move at the trade deadline, sending relief pitcher Ryan Helsley to the New York Mets in exchange for three prospects. The deal brings infielder Jesus Baez, right-handed pitcher Nate Dohm, and right-handed pitcher Frank Elissalt to the Cardinals' organization.
Jesus Baez, the Mets' eighth-ranked prospect, and Nate Dohm, their 14th-ranked prospect, are joined by Elissalt in the Cardinals' system. Baez currently plays in High-A Peoria, where he is slashing .245/.308/.340 with five extra base hits, nine walks, and 23 strikes.
Dohm's ERA is affected by a four-run outing against the Dayton Dragons on August 19th, where he went only 2.1 innings. However, in the other 10 innings he's pitched for High-A Peoria, he has allowed only three runs. Nate Dohm's workload has been limited due to past arm injuries.
Frank Elissalt, who was not listed as a top-30 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, had a 3.02 ERA through 50.2 innings in Low-A for the Mets earlier this year. However, his performance with the Cardinals has been less impressive, with a 7.04 ERA through 7.2 innings, striking out only four batters and walking seven.
Jesus Baez, despite his offensive struggles, has shown the ability to play across the infield. Baez has joined the Cardinals' top 10 prospects as the seventh-best youngster in the system, while Nate Dohm (#17) has joined him in the top 30. Frank Elissalt was not listed as a top-30 prospect.
Ryan Helsley, who set a single-season save record for the Cardinals after not being traded, has had an underwhelming start with the Mets. He has an ERA of 11.45 and has allowed three home runs in a third of the innings he threw with the Mets. Helsley has also blown four saves, walked eight batters, and given up 14 earned runs with the Mets.
The Cardinals did not trade Helsley at the 2024 deadline, but ultimately decided to part ways with him, acquiring prospects with varying ceilings and skillsets in return. The return looks even better given Helsley's underwhelming performance in New York.
The Cardinals will be hoping that these prospects can make a positive impact in their organization, as they continue their pursuit of a World Series title. Ryan Helsley, meanwhile, will look to turn things around with the Mets and live up to the potential that made him a valuable trade piece in the first place.
