Theatre student thrives amidst the grandeur of Epic Universe's stage

Keeli Rodriguez, a theatre and drama graduate from Grand Canyon University, has made a significant impact in the themed experience industry. Her journey began during her time at GCU, where she honed her skills and gained confidence that would propel her to greater heights.

In her senior year, Rodriguez was the scenic designer for the production of "Peter and the Starcatcher" at GCU. Set in an orphanage, the show tackled the origin story of Peter Pan, earning 10 ariZoni nominations and four wins. This success caught the attention of the Assistant Dean of Theatre and Dance, William Symington, who was impressed by her innovative dorm room design.

Following her graduation from GCU, Rodriguez continued her studies at the University of Central Florida in the field of Themed Experience. Her hard work and dedication paid off when she was selected for Universal Creative's Themed Finishes team, even amidst the challenges posed by COVID-19.

Rodriguez spent 3 ½ years as part of the Themed Finishes team, contributing to the design of Harry Potter's Ministry of Magic and the Dark Universe at Universal Epic Universe. She crafted over 300 color boards for the project and became the paint documentation coordinator.

One of the most memorable moments during her time at Universal was her collaboration with Kary. Rodriguez and Kary spent hours drawing on Kary's whiteboard during the month leading up to production. Their work was so detailed and intricate that the ink on the whiteboard became permanent and has been kept as a testament to their collaboration.

Rodriguez has a hand in every single facade, touchable item, and ride in the Ministry of Magic and Dark Universe lands at Epic Universe. Her work on these lands has been recognised with a nomination from the ariZoni Awards for outstanding achievement in Arizona theatre.

Reflecting on her journey, Rodriguez shared that working on that play gave her the confidence to pursue design on a higher scale. Her dedication, creativity, and hard work have indeed taken her to new heights in the themed experience industry.
