Headline: European Parliament Members Support Global Sumud Flotilla in Solidarity with Gaza

In a show of solidarity, European Parliament members Ana Maria Gomes and Rima Hassan joined a civil society initiative aimed at breaking Israel's blockade of Gaza. The event, known as the Global Sumud Flotilla, took place at Sidi Bou Said port in Tunisia on an aid boat from Barcelona.

Ana Maria Gomes' Participation

Ana Maria Gomes, a former European Parliament member for the Portuguese Socialist Party (S&D-Fraktion), was among the participants in the 2018 Global Sumud Flotilla. The term "Sumud" means "Ausdauer" or "Standhaftigkeit" in Arabic, symbolising the central theme of Palestinian resistance.

Rima Hassan's Support

Rima Hassan, a current European Parliament member, was also present at the port to welcome the Global Sumud Flotilla. She praised the role of people in supporting the Palestinian cause, stating that it is not in the hands of governments but in the hearts of peoples everywhere.

Participants and Independence

More than 130 people from various countries registered to join the Global Sumud Flotilla departing from Tunis. It is an independent organization with no affiliation to any government or political party.

Crowd Gathering

Over 1,000 people gathered at the Tunisian port to welcome the group, demonstrating widespread support for the Palestinian cause.

Greta Thunberg's Statement

On a separate occasion, environmental activist Greta Thunberg made a statement about the situation in Gaza, referring to it as a "genocide" and "mass starvation by Israel's murder machine."

Flotilla Delay

The flotilla departing from Tunis was delayed due to technical and logistical reasons. Rima Hassan did not announce her intention to join the Global Sumud Flotilla on its voyage.

This collective action serves as a testament to the global solidarity with the people of Gaza, demonstrating that the Palestinian cause remains a significant concern for people around the world.
