Thousands of complaints pour in following the debut of the Philippines' platform for voicing issues about flood control initiatives
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) of the Philippines has taken a significant step in addressing issues related to flood control and infrastructure by implementing over 9,855 projects in recent months. These projects, listed on the website Sumbong sa Pangulo, are part of an initiative overseen by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who launched the platform in August 2025.
The platform is not limited to flood control projects. It also welcomes reports about road paving and road widening. Initially, the President mentioned the website only in relation to flood control projects, but its effectiveness in handling a wider range of complaints has been evident.
President Marcos has emphasised the importance of public feedback in the latest anti-corruption campaign. He encourages Filipinos to search for flood mitigation projects in their locality using a search filter or an interactive map on the website. Each flood control project on the website is accompanied by details such as its location, name of the contractor, cost, and completion date.
Since its launch on Aug 11, the website has received over 12,000 reports from concerned citizens. The President has expressed his encouragement for the public to continue using the website to submit their complaints. Citizens can report issues with the projects, such as damaged structures, lack of equipment, or unfinished work, even anonymously, and upload photos and videos as proof.
The Sumbong sa Pangulo website is the Palace's online channel for reporting corruption cases directly to the President. It also allows filing complaints about other projects, such as poorly constructed roads and subpar projects by the DPWH. The President encourages the public to play their part in reporting issues to the government.
Marcos acknowledged that the personnel of national government agencies cannot physically check each of the almost 10,000 flood mitigation projects in the country. He has acknowledged the high number of reports coming in through the website. The President also encourages the public to continue using the website to submit more reports of corruption.
The flood control projects include construction or repair works of various structures like cutoff channel, dike, drainage structure, flood mitigation facility, retarding basin, revetment, slope protection structure, spur dike, waterway, and embankment.
