Thousands of Demonstrators Expected as 8000 Police Muster at IAA
The International Motor Show (IAA) is set to take place in Munich from September 9th to 14th, marking a significant event for the city. This year's IAA, one of the world's largest auto and mobility shows, will see numerous exhibitions in the city centre.
The police force is gearing up for the event, with around 8,000 officers on duty during the IAA. On Saturday, September 10th, approximately 2,500 additional officers will be deployed to manage the crowds and ensure public safety. This is the third major operation for the Munich police this year.
The police vice-president, Christian Huber, discussed the IAA preparations at a press conference on Thursday. He mentioned that the police expect "individual actions" outside the six known protest events during the IAA. No specific details about the nature of the major operation were provided.
Climate activists, including groups like the "Widerstands-Kollektiv," the globalization-critical network "Attac," and the climate protection group "Extinction Rebellion," have traditionally been active during the IAA in Munich. They have staged blockades on the A9 motorway, symbolic acts like sinking a "Autosaurus" in water, and portraying floating corpses to highlight climate dangers. This year, expectations include continued strong activism focused on criticizing insufficient political will for the mobility transition and opposing the auto industry's fossil fuel dependence.
However, the climate activist group "Last Generation" is not expected in the city this year.
Munich residents should expect traffic closures, especially on Saturday, due to the IAA and the football game between FC Bayern and Hamburger SV, classified as a "high-risk game." The police ask Munich residents not to drive into the city by car during the IAA.
