Southern Quebec Weathers Severe Storm, Thousands Without Power
Southern Quebec is currently experiencing a severe storm, with heavy winds, rain, and thunderstorms affecting the region.
According to Maja Rapaic, a meteorologist at Environment Canada, the winds are more organized and widespread than usual. These winds, observed in certain regions of southern Quebec, are reaching speeds of 60 to 70 km/h, causing power outages across the province.
Environment Canada issued a wind warning around 5 p.m. for Greater Montreal and the Centre-du-Quebec region, predicting precipitation until midnight, with an accumulation of 10 to 15 mm of rain. Thunderstorms were observed in the Laurentians, and in some areas, they were accompanied by the powerful winds.
Hydro-Québec, the organization responsible for restoring power in Quebec after the outage caused by the weather event on September 5, stated on its website that the thunderstorms passing through parts of Quebec are causing power outages. Nearly 50,000 addresses were without power Thursday evening, and by 11 p.m., approximately 48,000 households were still affected by the power outages.
Hydro-Québec is deploying all necessary efforts to restore power as quickly as possible. Collège Esther-Blondin in Lanaudière will be closed for the day on September 5 due to "major damage on the grounds" and electrical failures.
Maja Rapaic explained that these winds are more organized and widespread than usual, making the storm more severe than expected. Despite the improvements later in the evening, residents are advised to stay vigilant and prepare for potential power outages and heavy rain.
