Three key terms to verify for the junior spelling bee final.

The "Youth Word of the Year" has been a popular and intriguing event since its inception in 2008. This year, the final announcement is set to take place on October 18 at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Voting for the top 3 candidates - "Goonen," "Checkst du," and "Das crazy" - is currently open and will close on October 7, 2025. The winner will be revealed at the official announcement event, also on October 18 at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

The "Youth Word of the Year" is a term that represents the language and culture of young people. Previous winners have included "Swag," "Yolo," "Aura," "Niveaulimbo," "Gammelfleischparty," and "Cringe."

Interestingly, one of the candidates this year, "Goonen," is also a term that is not commonly found in dictionaries. It stands for constant sexual stimulation without climax, also known as "Gooning." Another term with a similar connotation, "Gooning" is also in the final round for the "Youth Word of the Year."

The Langenscheidt panel, responsible for selecting the "Youth Word of the Year," considers sexual terms to be part of youth language. This reflects the open and honest nature of conversations among young people today.

However, it's important to note that prolonged self-pleasure can promote dopamine addiction and lead to an unhealthy relationship with one's own sexuality. It's crucial to maintain a balance and promote healthy habits among young people.

In addition to "Goonen," the other two finalists are "Checkst du," which is used at the end of a sentence to ensure understanding, and "Das crazy," an all-purpose phrase used when speechless or not in the mood for a real answer.

The voting process has received high six-figure numbers, indicating a strong interest among young people in this event. The majority of votes were cast by young people between the ages of 11 and 20, demonstrating the relevance of this award to the youth of today.

The "Youth Word of the Year" is more than just a fun and trendy event. It serves as a reflection of the language and culture of young people, providing insights into their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. As we eagerly await the announcement of the 2025 winner, let's remember to appreciate the richness and diversity of youth language.
