Thriving Lioness Recovers a Year After Escaping Shell Shock in Ukraine Rescue Operation
In a heartwarming tale of rescue and rehabilitation, a lioness named Yuna is living her life to the fullest a year after being welcomed to her UK home.
Yuna, who was rescued from a small, bare enclosure in Ukraine, has undergone a significant transformation since her arrival at The Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent. The centre for the big cats, built with a successful fundraising campaign of £500,000, now houses Yuna and several other rescued lions.
The Big Cats in Crisis campaign, initiated due to Yuna's story, led to her rescue and the rescue of four more lions from Ukraine. The Four Paws organization played a crucial role in the rescue, raising around 1 million euros to build a centre for the big cats.
Cam Whitnall, the managing director and wildlife expert at The Big Cat Sanctuary, described Yuna as a symbol of hope that inspired the rescue of other lions, specifically Rori, Amani, Lira, and Vanda. Yuna's condition has improved remarkably since her rescue, and she is now full of personality and enjoys exploring her new surroundings.
Rori, another rescued lion, lives in an enclosure next to Yuna's at The Big Cat Sanctuary. It seems that Yuna has formed a romantic connection with Rori, adding another layer of joy to her new life.
Yuna's story began when she was evacuated from Ukraine, suffering from a severe concussion caused by shell shock. Despite the initial hardships, Yuna's change in condition has been remarkable to observe. She is now living the life a lion should, according to Cam Whitnall.
The Big Cat Sanctuary is the current home for these rescued lions, providing them with a safe and spacious environment to roam and live out their lives in comfort. The fundraising campaign that built the centre has given these big cats a second chance at life, and their stories serve as a testament to the power of compassion and determination.
