Thriving teenagers, once emotional upon leaving Scotland, are now grinning in the school environment of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
In the heart of the United Arab Emirates, two twin girls embarked on a new journey, starting their schooling at the British International School Abu Dhabi in January 2024. The transition, however, was overwhelming, given the stark contrast in size and culture compared to their previous rural Scottish school with just 75 pupils.
The girls, now 15, were the oldest pupils in their old school and knew every face. The new school, with its 2,000 pupils drawn from various global locations, presented a whole new world of diversity. On their first day, the girls were tearful, but by the end of the day, they were smiling, having already made friends from various global locations.
Life in Abu Dhabi has broadened their horizons at an important time in their lives, making them more culturally aware and tolerant. They have learned about various cultures, countries, religions, and languages, a testament to the school's commitment to fostering a global perspective.
The first week back at school was an adjustment, with changes in teachers and timetables, as well as some friends leaving the country. However, the girls resumed their friendships after the summer break, exchanging gifts and enjoying each other's company in person.
The girls' smartphones are important for keeping in touch with friends despite their parents' concerns about screen time. A recent Netflix series, Adolescence, served as a reminder of online dangers, prompting the parents to double down on screentime limits. The girls, in response, have asked for smartwatches instead, which have features like step-counters, heart-rate trackers, and can connect back to smartphones.
The twin girls' parents, like many parenting teenagers in a digital world, have faced challenges. But they believe that growth comes through discomfort and resilience is built one experience at a time. The move to Abu Dhabi, with its diverse culture and opportunities, has provided a unique learning experience for the girls, teaching them how to connect across cultures and find their feet in unfamiliar places.
One of the most significant moments for the parents watching their children grow up was seeing the girls take a taxi to and from a water park on their own, demonstrating confidence and adaptability. The new school year marks a significant moment for the family, as they navigate this exciting new chapter in their lives.
