Italian Fashion Legend Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91
Giorgio Armani, one of the richest men in the world with a net worth estimated at $11.8 billion, passed away this week at the age of 91. The news has sent shockwaves through the fashion industry and beyond, with tributes flooding in from Hollywood and beyond.
Armani was hospitalized with viral bronchopneumonia in June in Milan. Despite seeming to recover, the illness weakened him significantly. After his 91st birthday on July 11, his long-standing problems with his liver returned. However, the exact cause of his death has not been confirmed, with Italy's Corriere della Sera newspaper reporting liver failure, but the company has not confirmed this.
The public viewing of Armani's casket took place at the Teatro Armani in Milan and lasted for two days. Hundreds of people queued up to pay their respects, including Ferrari chairman John Elkann, Donatella Versace, and Giorgio Armani's longtime companion Leo Dell'Orco, who heads Armani's men's style office.
In his final interview, Armani named Dell'Orco among family and close friends to whom he was gradually transferring responsibility. His company will continue through a gradual, organic transition involving his close associates, notably Dell'Orco, and family members including his two nieces Roberta and Silvana, his sister Rosanna, and her son Andrea, supported by the Giorgio Armani Foundation established in 2016.
Armani did not designate a single successor before his death, but his company has been under his top-to-bottom control as it expanded into luxury hotels, cosmetics, accessories, and interiors. He was credited with inventing red-carpet fashion after opening an office in Los Angeles in 1983.
Giorgio Armani's staff were among the first mourners to pay their respects, with his coffin put on public display at the headquarters of his lifestyle company. The city of Milan has declared the day of his funeral a day of mourning.
Armani leaves a question mark over the future of his empire, as he had no children. However, his company is well-positioned for a smooth transition, with a strong team of associates and family members ready to carry on his legacy.
The fashion world will remember Giorgio Armani as a trailblazer and a true legend. His impact on the industry will be felt for generations to come.
