Thunderous wails echo through Solingen on Thursday, as the sirens blare.
Solingen is gearing up for a significant change in its warning system, as the city prepares to install 13 additional stationary sirens in October. This move is aimed at enhancing the coverage of the warning system across the city area.
The nationwide warning day, scheduled for Thursday, September 12, will serve as a test for the improved warning system in Solingen. The federal government will trigger the warning centrally via the Modular Warning System (MoWaS), and the fire department of Solingen will be responsible for the broadcast of warning messages.
Radio RSG will handle the broadcast of warning messages for the fire department of Solingen during the test alarm. A test warning message will be sent to all smartphones via the NINA warning app and cell broadcast.
On the day of the test, residents can expect to hear the sirens sound at 11:00 AM. The sounding will consist of one minute of all-clear, followed by one minute of warning, and another minute of all-clear. It's important to note that this is a test warning and not a real emergency.
Residents who cannot perceive the siren signals are encouraged to provide feedback to the fire department of Solingen at "[email protected]", specifying the exact location.
Comprehensive information for the population will be provided during the warning day. This information, along with the possibility to download the NINA app, can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) at Warn-App NINA - BBK (bund.de).
The city of Solingen is not the only one participating in the national warning day. The entire federal territory will be under a warning level 1 on September 12. Information about the test alarm and sirens will be displayed on digital pillars in the Solingen city area.
Currently, there are a total of 19 stationary sirens installed throughout the city area, with mobile sirens at Schützenplatz and Hamburger Straße in the Ohligs area also activated. The 13 additional sirens, to be installed in October, will further improve the coverage throughout the city area.
Residents are also advised to check their cell broadcast reception capability in advance at Cell Broadcast - BBK (bund.de).
The national warning day in Solingen is a crucial step towards ensuring the city's readiness in case of an emergency. By participating in this nationwide event, Solingen reaffirms its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of its residents.
