"Tom Pidcock shatters multiple power records in the Vuelta a España, managing to preserve his spot on the General Classification podium despite being dropped up the tough Angliru climb."
Tom Pidcock Maintains Podium Position at Vuelta a España
Tom Pidcock, racing for Q36.5 Pro Cycling, continued his impressive run at the Vuelta a España, maintaining his podium position on stage 13. The British cyclist faced a challenging day on the Alto de l'Angliru, where he was distanced from the lead group 5.9km from the top. Despite losing 1:16 to eventual stage winner João Almeida and race leader Jonas Vingegaard, Pidcock's overall performance was commendable.
Pidcock rated his performance on the day as "not bad," but tomorrow's stage is the next step in his General Classification (GC) bid. The stage includes the brutal duo of Puertu de San Llaurienzu (9.9 km at 8.6%) and La Farrapona. Lagos de Somiedo (16.8 km at 6%). Pidcock's coach, Kurt Bogaerts, described the stage as shorter but very intense.
Pidcock has looked at his very best so far at this Vuelta, according to his own assessment and confirmed by his numbers. He has broken numerous power records this Vuelta, a testament to his incredible form. However, the effects of racing a second Grand Tour of the season are starting to show. Pidcock feels the toll, but his more focused approach has kept him in good stead up to this point.
Pidcock's main competitors, Simon Yates's teammate Adam Yates and Enric Mas, are strong contenders chasing him in the race. Pidcock acknowledges their strength and is aware that he needs to perform at his best to maintain his position. Q36.5 will reassess and defend their place with Tom Pidcock, as another brutal mountain test approaches tomorrow.
Pidcock's coach also emphasizes the importance of staying within Pidcock's limits and controlling his effort in the remaining stages. Bogaerts suggests that a top five could be possible for Pidcock in the remaining stages of the Vuelta a Espana. Pidcock's partner and dogs, as well as his team, were waiting for him after the stage. The coach and the team are also waiting for Pidcock after the stage, ready to discuss the strategies for the upcoming stages.
Unfortunately, Pidcock missed the chance at a potential stage win into Bilbao due to pro-Palestine protests causing a neutralisation. Regardless, Pidcock remains focused on his GC bid and is determined to give his best in the remaining stages of the Vuelta a España.
