Artificial Intelligence in Action: A Look at Its Various Applications

In the world of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) is making strides in various industries, from healthcare to sports and even consumer goods. Here are some fascinating examples of AI being used in innovative ways.

Healthcare

In a significant development, IBM and the Michael J. Fox Foundation have collaborated to create a machine learning model that aids clinicians in predicting the progression of Parkinson's disease in patients. The model takes into account factors such as medication-masked symptoms, helping doctors to assess the disease's progress more accurately.

Researchers from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the University of Toronto are also working on a system to predict the progression stage of Parkinson's disease in patients.

Solar Energy

The prediction of solar flares is another area where AI is making a mark. Researchers led by Nagoya University have developed a model that predicts solar flares based on data about the Sun's magnetic fields. Meanwhile, a separate model, developed by researchers, identifies key characteristics such as twisting magnetic field lines and areas where positive and negative magnetic fields are next to each other. This model accurately predicted seven of nine large solar flares from the last solar cycle.

Sports

In the sports industry, AI is being used to enhance player authentication and safety measures. The New York Mets, for instance, use an AI-enabled system created by Alclear for player authentication and temperature checks at their baseball stadium. The system also incorporates facial recognition technology. Los Angeles FC plans to use a similar system to ensure fans are wearing masks once they return to the stadium.

Consumer Goods

Keurig Dr Pepper is leveraging AI by using WiFi-enabled coffee brewers to forecast demand more accurately. The system learns from consumer usage data, providing valuable insights into consumer behaviour.

Golf Equipment

Callaway, a sporting goods company based in California, is using a supercomputer and AI to design golf clubs. The system analyses player shots and designs club faces, aiming to improve the performance of each club.

As these examples demonstrate, AI is proving to be a versatile tool, with the potential to revolutionise numerous sectors. Its applications continue to expand, offering exciting possibilities for the future.
