Tourist discovered in the mountainous region of Sochi
In a heartening development, a tourist has been found alive after going missing in the mountains of Sochi, Russia, on August 31, 2023. The missing individual has been identified as Sergey Melnikov, an employee of the photo service at the Rosa Khutor ski resort.
The incident occurred during a hiking trip, where Melnikov fell behind the group during the descent from the Aibga Ridge, located east of Krasnaya Polyana. The other tourists in the group were unable to find him.
Initially, the search for Melnikov was aided by a Ka-32 helicopter, and later, the Southern Regional Search and Rescue Team (SRST) of the Russian Emergency Ministry joined the efforts. Sixty-three rescuers and eleven units of equipment were involved in the search operation.
Despite the challenging terrain, the perseverance of the SRST paid off, and Melnikov was discovered in the village of Aibga, deep within the Sochi mountains. The news of his discovery was made public today, and all SRST teams have since returned to their base.
The leader of the mountaineering and rescue team operating in Sochi and involved in the search for Melnikov is Yuri Volkov. The information about Melnikov's discovery was relayed by border service personnel.
Melnikov works as a photographer at the Rosa Khutor ski resort and was on his day off when he decided to go hiking in the mountains. It is not clear why he did not register with the Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief of the Russian Federation (MCHS) before his trip, as is customary for such excursions.
This remarkable rescue serves as a reminder of the dedication and skill of the emergency services personnel in Russia and the importance of adhering to safety protocols when venturing into the great outdoors.
