Big 12 Tournament Preview: Baylor Favourites as Action Kicks Off

The Big 12 Tournament is set to tip off on Wednesday, March 10th, at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, with seven teams from the conference ranked in the Associated Press media poll. The tournament, which ends on Saturday, March 13th, promises to be a thrilling event, featuring some of the best college basketball teams in the nation.

Baylor, who won the 2021 Big 12 Tournament championship, are the odds-on favourites to win the tournament again this year, with odds of -134, according to DraftKings. Junior guard Jared Butler, rated the Big 12's best player by KenPom.com and the fifth-best nationally, leads the Bears. Senior guard MaCio Teague is second in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game.

Kansas, who finished second in the regular season, is expected to continue its good form and win the tournament. The Jayhawks are the only team to have beaten Baylor this season. Senior guard Taz Sherman is scoring 13.4 points a game, and junior guard Sean McNeil has an 11.9 average.

The first round of the tournament includes a matchup between #8 seed TCU and #9 Kansas State at 6:30 pm ET, and #7 Oklahoma versus #10 Iowa State at 9:30 pm ET. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday, with #4 West Virginia playing #5 Oklahoma State at 11:30 am, #1 Baylor opposing the TCU-Kansas State winner at 2:30 pm, #2 Kansas facing the Oklahoma-Kansas State winner at 5:30 pm, and #3 Texas squaring off with #6 Texas Tech at 8:30 pm.

Texas, who are on a three-game winning streak, are led by junior guard Andrew Jones, who is scoring 14.9 points a game. Sophomore guard Terrance Shannon Jr. (12.5), junior guard Kyler Edwards (10.2), and sophomore guard Kevin McCullar (10.1) are also capable scorers for Texas Tech. Sophomore guard Mac McClung is averaging 16.6 PPG for Texas Tech. Junior guard Courtney Ramey of Texas is making 44.8% of his shots from long distance and averaging 13.6 points and 4.0 assists.

Oklahoma State's star freshman guard Cade Cunningham is expected to return for the Big 12 Tournament. Senior guard Avery Anderson III is averaging 14.3 points and 4.0 assists for the Cowboys.

The semifinals will be played on Friday night, and the championship game will be on Saturday night. The tourney winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Baylor is third in the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 125.3 points per 100 possessions, according to KenPom.
