Town hall president in Baden-Württemberg advocates for stern lockdown measures

Mannheim, the first city in Baden-Württemberg, has taken a significant step to combat the rising COVID-19 cases by imposing a nighttime curfew from 9 pm to 6 am. This measure, which allows citizens to leave their homes only for work, medical emergencies, or to walk their dogs, was announced by Peter Kurz, the Mayor of Mannheim and President of the Baden-Württemberg State Parliament.

The nighttime curfew comes as private encounters have been identified as the main driver of infections, a concern shared by Mayor Kurz. In a bid to ensure compliance, Mannheim has also banned nighttime gatherings due to non-compliance issues.

Mayor Kurz has suggested that if COVID-19 numbers remain high, a brief, strict shutdown during the January holidays could be considered. He believes that such a measure would cause less economic damage than a prolonged extension of current measures. The proposed shutdown would last for two weeks, according to Kurz.

Looking back, Kurz believes that the autumn holidays would have been a suitable time for a shutdown in retrospect. However, the search results do not provide clear public information about other cities in Baden-Württemberg that have implemented similar night curfews (Nachtsperrregelungen) and experienced infection rates above 200.

Despite the challenges, Kurz remains optimistic, stating that there would be a clear perspective of the shutdown ending after two weeks. He emphasises that the economic damage from the proposed shutdown would be less than from a prolonged extension of current measures.

As the situation evolves, Mannheim continues to lead the way in implementing measures to control the spread of COVID-19, setting an example for other cities in Baden-Württemberg and beyond.
