Benalmadena Takes Steps to Address Water Scarcity and Promote Conservation

Benalmadena, a popular tourist destination on the Costa del Sol, has taken a proactive approach to address water scarcity and promote efficiency with the introduction of a new water regulation. The new ordinance, approved following a period of public consultation in April, is the first of its kind implemented in the city.

Mayor Juan Antonio Lara has been dealing with frequent issues related to water pipes since taking office in 2023. Despite ongoing issues and previous incidents of explosive geyser-like bursts and sewage leaks, the council is taking steps to address water scarcity and encourage conservation.

The main goal of the new regulation is to prepare Benalmadena for potential future drought episodes. The council has learned from past experiences and has proactively created a legal framework to address water scarcity swiftly.

One of the key measures in the new regulation is the encouragement of the use of alternative water sources for non-potable purposes like irrigating green spaces and cleaning streets. The council is also working on expanding the use of recycled water for irrigation, following the example set by the Parque de la Paloma over the past two years.

Ongoing works are being done to replace antiquated water pipes, and the council hopes to raise public awareness and encourage residents to use water responsibly. The council issued a warning of another cut in the water supply due to ongoing works on August 28.

Despite the challenges, the mayor, Juan Antonio Lara, is determined to tackle the water pipe issues head-on. He has a look of desperation when pictured with someone from the water company, but he remains optimistic about the future of Benalmadena's water supply.

The name of the person responsible who arrived at the Benalmadena city administration in 2023 and repaired the water pipes while communicating with the water company is not publicly available. However, it is clear that the current council has created a legal framework to address water scarcity, unlike previous administrations.

Sewage leaks have occurred near the beach, but the council is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and sustainability of Benalmadena's water supply. The new water regulation is a significant step towards a more water-efficient and resilient city.
