Toxic Metals Contamination Site in St. Louis, Missouri - Information Sheet, October 2022
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has successfully completed a cleanup at the Gateway Plating Superfund Site in St. Louis, Missouri. Located at 2501 Texas Avenue, in the Fox Park neighborhood, the site consists of an abandoned industrial metal plating facility covering approximately 0.6 acres in a mixed residential and industrial urban area.
The EPA's cleanup of the Superfund site is part of the Environmental Protection Agency's Superfund program, a federal initiative aimed at addressing and remediating hazardous waste sites to protect local residents from toxic contamination and return land to safe conditions. The program is commonly known as Superfund, which also refers to the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA).
During the spring and summer of 2022, EPA worked closely with DeSales Community Development to assess and remove hazardous substances from the Gateway Plating Superfund Site. Assessments performed by EPA in 2021 found approximately 100 containers and 20 open vats on the site. Sampling from these containers identified caustic solids, acidic solids and liquids, and basic liquids present at the site.
Corrosive and toxic wastes found at the site pose a threat to human health and the environment. Without internet access, documents related to the cleanup can be viewed at the St. Louis Public Library, Barr Branch, located at 1701 S. Jefferson Ave., St. Louis, MO 63104; phone number 314-771-7040. Site project information is also available to the public on EPA's website.
In 2021, EPA referred the Gateway Plating Superfund Site to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. All wastes were transported off-site for disposal in July 2022, completing all planned cleanup work for the site. The Gateway Plating Superfund Site is now another step closer to being returned to safe conditions, ensuring the health and well-being of the local community.
