Toyota President Akio Toyoda Paying a Visit to the Inter-Company Unit Developing Electric Vehicles Within Office Housing Complex: Continuation

In the ongoing series, we delve into Akio's visits to offices housing inter-company units developing BEVs. The latest stop was at the Tokyo Motor Show, where Akio was asked about his opinions on BEVs during a management meeting.

Following the meeting, Akio visited Subaru's Technical Center in Mitaka with Subaru's President Nakamura. The visit marked a significant step in their alliance, formed on an even footing by mutually agreeing to share their strengths.

Akio's impression of Subaru as a whole is that all employees feel a strong love for Subaru and its cars. This shared passion was evident in the ZEV B&D Lab, a special unit focused on BEV product development and business implications of ZEVs, which Akio also visited.

The ZEV B&D Lab aims to foster innovative development processes and deliver appealing BEVs to customers. Notably, the Lab does not consist solely of Toyota members, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the alliance.

During his talk at the Lab, Akio emphasised the importance of a work environment that fosters mutual learning and eliminates hierarchies beyond those required for accountability. He believes that a work environment where everyone, regardless of experience or company, can learn from each other is beneficial.

Akio's visit to the ZEV B&D Lab was immediately after the Tokyo Motor Show. During the Show, he expressed his personal opinion that thinking one is great can hinder improvement, and that maintaining curiosity by acknowledging the existence of people who are better is important.

In a surprising turn of events, Akio shared his preference for a car that is noisy and smells of gasoline, which created buzz on social media. However, this preference was not discussed during his visit to the ZEV B&D Lab.

As the series progresses, we will delve deeper into Akio's thoughts about BEVs and his beliefs regarding the future of the automotive industry. The next and final article in the series will focus on Akio's thoughts about selling cars and his response to a team member about training.

In the meantime, Akio has requested everyone to welcome Subaru's President Nakamura when he visits Toyota's office. The alliance between Toyota and Subaru continues to strengthen, and we look forward to seeing the innovative developments that will emerge from their collaboration.
