Traffic disruption on A46 at Sonnborner Kreuz junction
Traffic chaos is currently unfolding on the A46 between the Wuppertal-Sonnborn interchange and the Haan-Ost interchange, with traffic coming to a standstill in the direction of Düsseldorf. This disruption is due to the ongoing bridge reconstruction project, which is scheduled to be completed in summer 2026.
The closure of the A46 in the direction of Wuppertal-Nord interchange up to the Wuppertal-Sonnborn interchange is causing significant traffic disruptions, with longer tailbacks expected. Local traffic is advised to detour via the L417 or the B7 to avoid the congested area.
Rail traffic is also partially affected, especially in the direction of Solingen and Düsseldorf. Passengers are advised to inform themselves about connections in good time as rail services are being used as a replacement for buses. The connection from the L418 to the A46 in the direction of Düsseldorf cannot be used.
The bridge reconstruction project is a significant undertaking, connecting the Burgholz tunnel and the Kiesberg tunnel to the motorway. The responsible authority for this project is the Autobahn GmbH of the Federal Government, which manages planning and construction, often in cooperation with state agencies such as DEGES for project management in federal road construction.
The total costs of the bridge reconstruction are estimated at around 8.5 million euros. To manage the traffic congestion, appropriate detours are signposted, but these routes are also expected to become congested quickly. To avoid the area on a larger scale, the motorway company recommends using alternative routes such as the A1, A40, or A52 for long-distance traffic.
Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and expect delays due to the ongoing bridge reconstruction. The project is an essential part of improving the infrastructure in the region, but it is causing temporary inconvenience for commuters and travellers.
