In the bustling city of Oberhausen, traffic congestion is a common occurrence, regardless of the mode of transportation. The city council's SPD faction is voicing concerns about the upcoming major construction projects and their potential impact on traffic flow.

The SPD city council faction's spokesperson for planning, Silke Wilts, has expressed the urgent need for a satisfactory solution to alleviate the traffic burden on citizens, commuters, and craftsmen. The faction believes that the construction project in Lirich, specifically the Canal Bridge Ulmenstraße, must be significantly postponed to ensure that at least two north-south connections can be used relatively free of congestion.

The rebuild of the Blue Bridge, a crucial component of the public transport connection in Oberhausen, is scheduled for 2028. During its construction, the public transport route will be closed, potentially leading to more congestion and traffic disruptions. To mitigate this, buses will be rerouted via inner-city streets from the main station to the Sterkrade station.

The Osterfelder Straße railway bridge reconstruction will begin as early as next year, with the northern structure scheduled for construction in July 2026 and the southern one in 2029. Traffic will be rerouted via Wittekind and Waghalsstraße during this construction period. The completion of the Osterfelder Straße railway bridge reconstruction is scheduled for 2031.

The north-south connections across the Rhine-Herne Canal in Oberhausen often become bottlenecks due to their scarcity. The SPD city council faction's concerns are not unfounded, as three simultaneous major construction sites in Oberhausen could exacerbate the traffic situation.

Thorsten Berg, the SPD's mayoral candidate for the upcoming municipal election on September 14, has expressed similar concerns. He has questioned whether the city leadership is aware of the traffic situation and what they plan to do. Berg suggests that the mayor should speak to the Water and Shipping Authority to potentially alleviate the situation through temporal shifts in the bridge construction projects.

The rebuild of the Blue Bridge was reported by WAZ on July 18. The SPD city council faction has been focusing on major construction projects in the near future, and the traffic situation has become a significant point of discussion. The demolition and reconstruction of the Canal Bridge Ulmenstraße in Lirich are scheduled for 2028, with a construction period of about two years.

During the construction of the Canal Bridge Ulmenstraße, traffic will be rerouted via Buschhausener Straße. The SPD city council faction's spokesperson, Silke Wilts, has stated that a satisfying solution must be found for the citizens, numerous commuters, and craftsmen who will be affected by the traffic.

As the municipal election approaches, traffic congestion remains a pressing issue in Oberhausen. The SPD's mayoral candidate, Thorsten Berg, and the city council faction are advocating for postponing construction work on the Canal Bridge Ulmenstraße to relieve traffic in Oberhausen. The authorities' response to these demands remains to be seen.
