In the heart of Lisbon, a tragic incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, as the Elevador da Glória, a popular tourist attraction and a prominent feature in the city, derailed in the Bairro Alto area. The incident resulted in at least 15 fatalities, as reported by INEM, and several individuals were injured in serious conditions.

The Elevador da Glória, managed by Carris, connects Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara and has a route of approximately 265 meters. Owned by the Municipality of Lisbon (Câmara Municipal de Lisboa), this iconic elevator is a key part of Lisbon's transportation services.

Investigations into the cause of the derailment are ongoing, but the Elevador da Glória hit a building with brutal force and disintegrated like a cardboard box, as images of the accident revealed a tragedy never before seen in Lisbon.

The Government and the Prime Minister deeply regret the incident, and a national day of mourning has been declared to be observed on Friday. The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, has cancelled part of his agenda for Friday, including the signing of the financing contract for affordable housing with the European Investment Bank and his presence at Carolina Deslandes' concert as part of the Book Fair in Belém.

The authorities have been monitoring the situation since the first moments and are working diligently to provide updates on the latest information regarding the Elevador da Glória accident. As the investigation continues, the city of Lisbon and its people mourn the loss and pray for the recovery of those affected by this unfortunate incident.
