Tragedy in Zamfara: 13 Perish, 20 Remaining Missing After Boat Accident

In the troubled North-West region of Nigeria, another tragic incident has unfolded in Zamfara State. According to reports, at least 13 villagers lost their lives in a boat capsizing incident in Birnin Magaji ward. Over 20 more passengers remain missing as search efforts continue.

The incident occurred when residents, in a desperate bid to escape violence, boarded an overloaded boat at a riverbank. Panic gripped residents of Birnin Magaji as the news of the accident spread.

The district head of Birnin Magaji, Maidamma Dankilo, confirmed the deaths, stating that 13 bodies have been recovered so far. Among the victims was Shehu Mohammed, a health worker in Birnin Magaji, who lost his eldest son and two nieces in the boat accident.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the latest tragedy in Birnin Magaji. However, security operatives and local divers, including the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Army, and specialized diving rescue units, are currently engaged in rescue operations to locate the missing passengers.

This is not the first time Zamfara State has been affected by such tragedies. Data from SBM Intelligence shows that Zamfara recorded at least 50 mass abductions between July 2024 and June 2025, affecting more than 1,000 people. Last weekend, gunmen killed at least two people and kidnapped over 100 others in a separate attack approximately 150 kilometres west of Birnin Magaji.

On a separate note, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner of the rescheduled Zamfara constituency by-election. A supplementary election in Zamfara is scheduled for August 21. However, no further details about the meeting of PDP governors in Zamfara were provided.
