The events unfolded on a fateful day, with the police being called to the station due to a man causing a disturbance. Initial investigations suggested that the incident was an accident, but further developments have cast a darker shadow over the events.
According to reports from NDR, the suspect was diagnosed with "paranoid schizophrenia" in the past. The District Court of Hannover rejected an application for detention pending deportation on July 17, as there was no significant risk of flight.
When an officer arrived at the scene, they found the suspect among others. He led them to the body of a 16-year-old girl on the platform. The Public Prosecutor's Office in Göttingen later announced that the man is suspected of killing the teenager by pushing her against a train traveling at approximately 100 kilometers per hour.
DNA tests found the man's traces on the shoulder of the deceased girl, suggesting a "forceful" grip. An alcohol test conducted later showed a reading of 1.35 per mille for the suspect.
The teenager's family and community have been left in shock over the crime. Her grandfather reported hearing her screams during the incident, according to Bild newspaper. Several media outlets reported that the teenager's parents had expressed doubts about the initial assumption of an accident.
The man first filed an asylum application in Braunschweig in August 2022, which was rejected, and an expulsion to Lithuania was ordered. Later that evening, the suspect exhibited aggressive behavior at a reception facility and was transferred to a psychiatric clinic.
The suspect has not commented on the charges against him. A detention order was issued against him on suspicion of manslaughter. There is no known prior connection between the suspect and his alleged victim.
There is shock in the teenager's hometown over the crime, with the community grappling with the loss and the unsettling details of the incident. The name of the suspect remains undisclosed, as per the current reporting guidelines.
