Tragic incident reported on Lisbon's Gloria elevator, causing profound sorrow to the government.
In a tragic turn of events, the Elevador da Glória derailed late this afternoon on the Calçada da Glória in Lisbon. The immediate priority is to assist the victims, with at least eight individuals reported to be seriously injured.
Sadly, three confirmed deaths have occurred as a result of the derailment, and the number of fatalities may exceed ten. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
According to preliminary reports, the derailment was due to a failure of the connection between the cable and the accident car. The 32 mm thick cable detached from the car's anchorage, leading to an uncontrolled descent. Despite the brakes being applied, they were insufficient to stop the car. The reasons behind the cable's detachment are still under investigation.
The Government is maintaining close coordination with the Lisbon Municipal Chamber to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the public. It is up to the competent authorities to conduct thorough investigations to determine the causes of the accident and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Our thoughts are with the families of those affected by this tragedy. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
