Tragic road accident in Ka'u results in the fatalities of a young motorist

In a tragic turn of events, a 13-year-old boy identified as Kainui Kaupu-Manini lost his life in a traffic accident that occurred on September 10, 2023, on Cane Haul Road in Hilo, Hawaii.

The accident took place at 5:55 p.m., involving a blue 2006 Honda Civic, which was being operated by Kaupu-Manini. The vehicle left the roadway, went down an embankment, and unfortunately struck a tree. Despite emergency services' best efforts, Kaupu-Manini was pronounced dead at 6:33 p.m. at Ka'u Community Hospital.

A 15-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Honda Civic was not injured in the incident.

The West Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a coroner's inquest investigation into the accident. Potential witnesses are asked to contact Officer Ansel Robinson at (808) 326-4646, ext. 229, or at [email protected]. Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.

Sadly, Kaupu-Manini's death marks the 16th official traffic fatality this year. Last year, at this time, there were 22 traffic fatalities.
