Train accident occurred close to Riedlingen, detailing current information and remaining uncertainties

In a tragic incident, a train derailment occurred on July 27th near the town of Riedlingen in the Biberach district, approximately 45 kilometers southwest of Ulm. The accident site is on a single-track, non-electrified line.

The train involved was a regional express train RE55, traveling from Sigmaringen to Ulm. The train was traveling at around 80 kilometers per hour when the wagons derailed. Three people, including the train driver, a trainee, and a passenger, lost their lives in the accident. Thirty-six individuals were injured, including two children aged 7 and 13.

The exact reason for the train derailment remains unclear. Preliminary investigations are focusing on defective concrete sleepers, with further material-technical examinations underway, particularly on the route section between Villingen (Black Forest) and Donaueschingen. Extensive track maintenance and renewal works are being conducted by DB InfraGO in this area until at least mid-October 2025.

A geological report has been commissioned to investigate the exact cause of the accident, and the data recorder from the train has been retrieved for investigation. The data recorder and geological report are still being evaluated.

In response to the incident, DB has set up a free special hotline for those affected by the train derailment and their relatives - call 0800/311 1111. Passengers traveling between Ulm and Munderkingen are advised to use SWEG trains, and a replacement bus service has been established. A collection point has also been established at the Bürgerzentrum Daugendorf, Haldenrain 3, 88499 Riedlingen.

Several hundred personnel with appropriate equipment and six rescue helicopters were deployed at the scene. The recovery of the derailed train parts was challenging due to the inaccessible terrain. A recovery crane was brought to the scene to facilitate the work. Units of the Bavarian Red Cross provided support in the neighboring state.

A total of 24 emergency doctors treated the injured. The injured were taken to hospitals in Tübingen, Freiburg, Villingen-Schwenningen, Ludwigsburg, Ehingen, Biberach, and the University Hospital in Ulm.

Repairs to the track are expected to be completed by early November. It is speculated that the possible cause of the accident is an overflowing culvert due to heavy rain.

Investigations into the cause of the train accident are still ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Our thoughts are with those affected by this unfortunate incident.
