Train collision involving a young female victim

In a shocking turn of events, a 31-year-old Iraqi man, whose asylum application in Germany was rejected prior to August 10, 2023, has been placed in a psychiatric clinic under a detention order. The man is the prime suspect in the death of a 16-year-old girl at Friedland station two weeks ago.

According to the Dublin procedure, the suspect should have been in Lithuania, not Germany. However, the details surrounding his transfer remain unclear. The public prosecutor's office in Göttingen announced that the suspect is suspected of deliberately pushing the girl onto an oncoming freight train on August 11.

The police were called to the station shortly before the crime due to a man causing a disturbance. Initially, they assumed the girl's death was an accident. However, further investigations led to the suspect's arrest and the discovery of DNA traces of the suspect on the victim's shoulder.

The suspect, who had previously been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, exercised his right to remain silent during the confrontation with the investigative judge. A voluntary alcohol test showed 1.35 per mille.

The suspect led the police to the platform where the teenager was already dead. The police warned against speculations in social networks about the course of events, as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

The case highlights problems with the Dublin procedure, which regulates the distribution of asylum seekers in Europe. Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) called for a thorough investigation into why the suspect was not transferred.

The public debate intensified after a Facebook post by the AfD district association Eichsfeld (Thuringia) raised the question "Murder in Friedland?". The police urged the public to refrain from jumping to conclusions, emphasising the importance of a fair and thorough investigation.

Whether the suspect would serve a prison sentence or be permanently accommodated in a psychiatric clinic remains uncertain. The police are working diligently to uncover the truth and bring justice for the victim and her family.
