Tragic Train Derailment in Egypt's Oldest Railway Network

A severe train accident occurred on the route between Alexandria and Marsa Matruh in Egypt, leaving at least three people dead and more than 50 injured. The incident took place in the Marsa Matruh province, according to a report provided by dpa / EVN.

Photos from the scene show two overturned carriages in a ditch, and thirty ambulances were deployed to treat and transport the injured. The Egyptian Health Ministry described the incident as a "tragic accident".

The cause of the derailment appears to be a dip in the tracks, with some speculating that the train drivers involved may not have been adequately trained. The condition of Egypt's railway network, one of the oldest in Africa and the Middle East, spanning approximately 10,000 kilometers, is often neglected, with long-overdue maintenance work delayed.

This unfortunate incident is not the first major accident on Egypt's railway network. In 2002, a severe train accident resulted in over 360 fatalities due to a fire on a train. Inadequate training of train staff is sometimes cited as a cause of accidents.

The Egyptian authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the derailment and any potential measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The investigation is ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected by this tragic accident. We hope for a swift recovery for all those injured.
